Large brick storage building on right, with inmates digging trenches and laying sewage and water lines. Male inmates are wearing striped uniforms, while workers from outside camp are without stripes. There are no visible guards and the inmates all appear to be efficiently working together. In lower left of photo, four inmates are transporting what appears to be a beverage such as tea, coffee, or soup for the workers.

To ensure inmates were strong enough to push loaded carts uphill, and do other important construction work, Commander Goeth ensured inmates were well fed and not abused by the guards. Inmates here push rail carts uphill behind commander Goeth's residence, which was located to the right of the photo.
