Doctors dissected and examined the corpses for proof of time and cause of death. All major organs, including the heart, were removed and weighed. Almost every victim was executed with one pistol shot to the back of the head. A few had been stabbed with star shaped bayonets, which were only used by the Soviet military during the war. A 275 page book with 80 photographs entitled 'Official Material of the Mass Murder at Katyn' (English translation), was then published in September, 1943, and copies were sent to American, British, and other government representatives in Europe as well as all major newspapers and media outlets around the world.
